Simple Solutions to Sleepless Nights

gooseI started having trouble sleeping a few months ago and just couldn’t pinpoint the cause of the problem. At first it occurred to me that I should stick to a regimented sleep schedule - maybe a strict routine would get my mind and body used to resting at a given time of night. That approach didn’t work at all; I just spent even more time tossing and turning in bed. Then I saw my doctor and he prescribed some sleep aids.

The pills did what they were supposed to do - they knocked me out and left me hazy and exhausted the next day. I knew then that pharmaceuticals were not the answer; rather, it was up to me to find a safe, natural solution. A friend recommended that I take a simple approach and just find some softer bedding. I switched from my lumpy old blankets to goose down comforters, and the difference was immediately apparent. Ever since, I’ve been sleeping soundly through the night.

Staying in a 3 Star Hotel

summer-wedding-pictures-098 Last week I had the opportunity to stay at a 3 star hotel. I was going to a small conference in a city not far from home but knowing it would be late at night to drive home I decided to book a room. I book the hotel on line and some times you wonder if the rooms are as nice as the pictures.

When I walk into the hotel it was every bright and clean and well kept. The room I had was just like the picture on the website.

It had a mini kitchen with full frig, 2 electric burners to cook on, a microwave oven and a dish washer all the amenities of home. There was chesterfield on one side of the room and the bed on the other.

The bed was made up with nice white cotton sheets and lots of pillows. The comforter was a chocolate color with a white design through it. There was also a matching pillow to go with the down comforter.

This room was all that I hope it would be well maintain ,clean, bright and with all the luxuries you look for when you book a hotel room away from home.

This hotel was to me a 3 + more and I would look to stay at this hotel again if it was in the area I was going to in the future.

In these harsh economic times, it’s not unusual for American families to live on a tight budget. For me, “shoestring” doesn’t even begin to cover it. Of course my wife and I are sure to provide for our children’s every need, but sometimes there’s nothing left after grocery shopping and the other staples are out of the way. In any case, it’s taught us to live in a thrifty and energy-efficient manner.

I took special care to weather-proof our home this fall, and we’ve talked to the kids about conserving electricity and heat to drive down the bills. As it turns out, my wife and I have been able to turn the heat down several degrees at night knowing that we’ll stay warm beneath a queen goose down comforter. I’ll be looking for smaller versions of the very same comforter for the kids.

Nothing Warmer in winter than a Duvet

full-queen-solid-300-thread-count-duvet-sets-in10-colorsWinter has arrived. On cold winter nights we like to think of nothing but a warm soft duvet with flannel duvet cover. Temperature is falling and its freezing outside and it getting close to bed time.  You’re thinking about what could be better than crawling into bed under a fluffy duvet cover.

Lots of people refer comforters as duvets, but the fact is that comforters are filled with cotton or synthetic fibers. On the other hand duvets are filled with down. To get the best quality of down filled duvet you should make sure the “down fill power” be rated 575 at the minimum.

When shopping for a duvet and there is no mention of a down filling or down fill power it may not be worth the price. Duvets are more expensive then the average comforter. They are worth every penny of additional cost as they made of higher quality and will last a lifetime and can be passed down for generations.

Duvet covers can change the tone and décor of a bedroom that’s why they become quite popular in rest years. In the winter a cover made with flannel is the better choice particularly in colder areas.

Having zippers on the cover helps protect the outer shell of the down filled duvet from dirt, wear and tear over the years. Zippers on the cover lets people change the room décor with ease.

There is no better combination for warmth than a duvet with fluffy down and flannel when old man winter sets in.

Shopping For Bedding - 10 Tips-Part Two

Here are the final five tips in shopping for bedding. Hope this will help when shopping for your next bedding
6. Price - What is a good price and what is “cheap”?
Bedding is sold in all kinds of different packages. You can buy each piece separately or you can buy sets. Prices range for sizes, qualities, fabrics, etc. As an example, finding a new Queen Size Bed in a Bag set for under $50 is probably a “cheap” set. (It will wear out quickly). However, finding a new Queen Size Sheet set for around $50 is not unheard of.
7. Bed in a Bag - Is this a good choice?
Bed in a Bag sets are wonderful choices if you want to make things easy on yourself and save money. Bed in a Bag sets generally include the matching sheets, comforter or duvet cover, pillow cases, and pillow shams. Some also include a bed skirt and curtains. It is so nice to open one bag and have everything you need in it to do the whole room!
Not only that, but many duvet cover bed in a bag sets have a reversible duvet cover. You get a “deal” with a bed in a bag set because the items would be more expensive if purchased separately but also, it’s like getting two sets in one! Simply flip the duvet over for a whole new look. (Also, duvet covers are much easier to launder than comforters are.)
8. Warmth - How warm do you and/or your partner sleep?
My husband and I tend to “sleep warm”. I always keep this in mind when shopping for bedding. When given the choice of warmth, I choose a cooler cover. Being too warm while sleeping is just as uncomfortable as being too cold. Having to flip the covers off in the middle of the night interrupts the sleep cycle.
Especially when choosing a duvet or comforter, choosing how warm you like to be is important. Generally when two people share a bed they produce double the body heat. When one person sleeps alone, they may need warmer covers.
9. Mood - What mood do you want to set?
Do you want your bedroom to have a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere? Do you like it to be romantic? Do you want to express your vibrant personality? Choosing the mood you want in your bedroom will help you choose the style of bedding that will make you happy.
10. Accessories - Minimal or lots?
Do you like a lot of pillows on the bed? Do you like stuffed animals or other accessories on it? What about when you sleep in the bed? Do you want to take the time to remove a bunch of accessories before getting in? Or would you rather keep it minimal and just slip into bed without having to remove a bunch of stuff each night? Remember, the easier it is to make your bed in the morning, the more likely it is you will do it.
Again, this is a personal choice.
Keeping these things in mind while shopping for bedding will make the choice much easier for you and you will be happier with the end result that suits your lifestyle and personal choices.

Comforters are the top part of bedding set. A comforter is usually the thickest blanket on a bed. However, that really depends on personal comfort levels and times of the year.
Some people like their bedroom and bedroom decor to match, which would, of course include the comforter and complete bedding set. However, just because bedding ensemble colors are not the same, this does not mean they do not look good together. Bedding comforters can ether blend in or stand out to give your bed room décor just the right look and feel.
Today’s market provides a wide range of colors and styles of bedding comforters for you to choose from like goose down comforters to meet your home decorating and interior design needs. Today’s comforter styles and colors for your bed are not made to just to match your sheets and pillows but also may match your curtains and even the style of your bed, no matter if the bed is made of wood or metal materials. The darker the color of the bed the deeper and brighter the comforter colors should be. For example, pine green or mocha colors look great on darker wood. A red or white bedding comforter looks good on black wood or dark metal beds. Lime green, pink, or white is going to look good on a gold, white metal and light colored wood beds. However, my examples given here will depend on your own personal opinions, taste and decorating ideas. One type of comforter to look for is a goose down comforter.

Bedding comforters can be for any size bed. I am providing a size chart for you - all sizes are given in inches:
Standard Twin Size: 68″ x 86″
Extra Long Twin Size: 68″ x 90″
Standard Full or Double Sizes: 78″ x 86″ - including 86″ x 86″
Queen Size: 86″ x 86″ including 86″ x 94″
California or Western King Size: 102″ x 86″ including 102″ x 94″

Decorating with Throws

queen-size-terry-velour-throw100egyptian-cottonMake a room inviting and comfy by taking a velour throw and toss it over a chair or sofa. With all its texture and color a beautiful throw will be a wonderful statement piece.
There are many colors and styles to choose from. Throws can be change with the seasons. Fall and winter decorate with reds and gold. Spring and summer choose cotton throws in colors like soft blues, greens and neutrals.
The modern look is to fold the throw in a long narrow panel, place vertically on the back and seat of the sofa. Try putting a throw on your bed maybe over one corner of the bed or a non traditional way across the bed near the pillows rather then at the foot of the bed.
Throws can be used in any room to decorate or accessories. They are great to rap yourself up in on a cold winter night will watching TV.
Throws make great gifts for anyone you are buying for.

The Difference in a Bed Spread and Comforter

You may be surprised to learn that yes, there is a difference in a bed spread and comforter. Many people often think of these two things as the same thing. While they really both serve the same purpose, the two are quite different in deed. Telling the comforter apart from the bed spread is not that hard to do. Once you know the difference, you will be able to spot the difference in no time, and tell the two apart yourself.
While both the bed spread and comforter are used to cover the bed, and keep you warm at night, they both have very noticeable differences. If you care to take notice, you will find that the comforter is quite fluffy, and full of stuffing. The comforter is also thick, and can even be heavier than a bed spread is. If you are ever to wear hole in your comforter, you will see that there is stuffing inside, and even sometimes there are feathers.
While the bed spread and comforter are quite different, you may still want to learn a little more about the bed spread. A bed spread is always thin, and sometimes referred to as a coverlet. You would be more apt to use a bed spread in the summer and warmer months, and pull the comforter out of storage during the cooler months. That is how different the weights are in the two. You will be able to tell quite a difference sleeping under a bed spread when it is cold outside, if you are used to sleeping under a comforter. A bed spread is not stuffed with any stuffing, but will at times have a thin batting between the two layers of the top and bottom, kind of like a quilt. You will also find bed spreads that are as thin as a blanket, with only one layer of fabric used to make the whole thing.
Deciding which you prefer between the bed spread and comforter will be a personal preference. However, it is not unreasonable to own one of each, nor is it odd to use one or the other all year round. You should decide how you would be the most comfortable sleeping, and go with that choice. Some people do use the comforter year round, even in the warmer months in hotter climates. However, these people also probably keep their home quite cool when it is hot outside, and like the look of the comforter on the bed rather than the bed spread. There are also some that prefer the bed spread year round and go with that choice. You will have to make the choice for yourself. However, you now know the difference between the two, and will be able to choose accordingly.

egyptian-cotton-down-alternative-fullqueen-comforterWhen we get unhappy with our down comforters, it’s time to check out other alternative comforters. We will explore a few alternative choices. Here are some tips for buying alternative comforters.

You can look at synthetic down instead if the usual down. Synthetic is not as warm and durable as regular down but comes very close.

Like some you may be allergic to regular down comforters, so your solution lies in buying allergen free down comforters.

Does the cost have you worried, then look in to buying polyester comforters? Not as comfortable as regular down comforters but still light to feel and can be machine washed, which is a convenience factor?

Money no object then you might consider a silk alternative down comforter. Silk comforters are very good to feel and the best when it comes to allergy, they are naturally hypoallergenic. However they can only be dry cleaned and not put in a washing machine.

The last type of comforter you may want to conceder is wool filled down. They are light and warm as regular down comforters but pretty expensive, second only to silk.

When buying down alternative comforters these are just a few tips for you to consider.
